Boxing champion-turned-politician and now incumbent Senator Manny Pacquiao expressed his willingness to give up his current position in the government should the plans of President Rodrigo Duterte to shift the country to a Federal type of government will push through.
In his interview with ANC last January, Pacquiao said that he is willing to sacrifice his Senate seat since he is aware that Duterte’s plan is for the benefit of the Filipino people.

“Hindi ako nag-aano sa posisyon ko. Kung magkaroon ng kung anong ikabubuti ng ating bansa, kung magkaroon man ng Federalism, kung i-abolish ang Senado at ang lahat ng Congress, wala akong problema basta ikabubuti ng ating bansa,” Pacquiao said.
“Wala akong problema diyan basta sa ikabubuti ng ating bansa kasi yun man lang yung purpose ko why I’m here, why I’m serving people. I’m not serving for the good of myself, of anybody, ng pamilya ko. Ang akin ay para magserbisyo sa tao, ipakita sa tao na maganda yung kalalabasan at para sa mga tao.” he added.
Under a federal government, both houses of Congress will be abolished and was what critics claimed, President Duterte’s term could also be extended.
When asked if he is in favor of extending the President’s term, Pacquiao said he does not see any problem with that as he knows Duterte very well and his love for the Filipino people.
“Gusto ko siyang leader sa ating bansa. Whether ma-extend o hindi wala akong problema. Gusto kong ma-extend because of his leadership, strong leadership pero hindi naman ako ang mag decide. Mayroon tayong constitution na dapat sundin at dapat nating tanungin ang taongbayan,” Pacquiao said.
“I know Duterte well. Panatag ang loob ko sa kaniya because I know him well since Before-yung pagkatao niya, dedicated siya masyado sa tao; halos yung sarili niya di niya iniisip,” he said.
