“Hindi maiaahon sa krisis ang bansa ng boksing,” this is how Father Robert Reyes also known as “the running priest” lambasted the Filipino people’s obsession on the sports of boxing especially since we have our own Filipino boxing icon, Manny Pacquiao.
On his Opinion article at Bulgar Online, Father Robert lamented on how the faith of Filipino Catholics was affected by Pacquiao’s rose to fame as one of the greatest boxers of his generation.
He said that he is very much aware how much the Filipino people love boxing to the point that their world will stay still just to watch his much-awaited fights even skipping going to mass when the televised fight airs on a Sunday.
“Oo, tila talagang tumigil ang lahat dahil sa kakaibang Sabbath ng diyus-diyosan ng boksing,” the priest said.
Father Robert said that the Filipino’s obsession with boxing will not help the economy even a bit.
The priest who is also a known critic of President Rodrigo Duterte and his administration also expressed his disappointment on how the Filipino people would rather choose to watch Pacquiao’s boxing match instead of going to Church and pray to God.
