Duterte, may banta sa mga istambay sa kalye!

“Tambay” from the root word “stand by” is a common sight in every Filipino community, they are known as a group of friends who gather along street corners to chitchat, play games, and sometimes engage into a drinking session.

But will this favorite Filipino past time be over soon after the warning made by President Rodrigo Duterte?

During his speech to newly-promoted enforcers in Macalañang on Wednesday, he suggested loiterers to just go home instead of citing potential trouble in the community.

Duterte said that the streets should be useful for law-abiding citizens and not as a haven for criminals and drug pushers.

“Ang mga criminal dapat diyan, ang mga durugista, they are not supposed to be there. So my directive is ‘pag mag-istambay-istambay diyan sa, umuwi kayo,” the President said.

“‘Pag hindi kayo umuwi, ihatid ko kayo doon sa opisina ni ano—Pasig. Ako nang bahala. Ilagay mo lang diyan. Talian mo ‘yung kamay pati—ihulog ko yan diyan sa…” he added.

Because of this, he advised the newly-promoted officers to be strict in enforcing the law against the notorious loiters in their respective areas.

“Do not … You be strict. Part of confronting people who do not do nothing and just idling around, they are potential trouble for the public,” he said.

But these remarks were also criticized by some lawmakers especially when he suggested to throw the offenders in the Pasig river.

“Nothing wrong with fighting crime being a responsibility of government. But if you go down to going after tambays and having them thrown in the Pasig river, then something must be afoot now that President Duterte views common crime being a national security threat,” said Akbayan party-list Rep. Tom Villarin.

The lawmaker also likens Duterte’s suggestion to some sudden disappearance that happened during the martial law regime.

“Is this martial law redux when even converging in streets will lead you to jail or worse make you disappear in the murky waters of Pasig or somewhere else?” he added.
