Mga raliyista, pinaglamayan ang umanoy “pagkamatay ng demokrasya” sa bansa

After the historic ruling of Supreme Court to oust Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno, supporters of the latter gathered in the streets to condemn the decision.

Some of the protesters also staged a funeral complete with casket, flowers, and candle to signify the “death of democracy” in the country.

According to protesters, the mock-up funeral symbolizes their mourning for democracy’s death after the decision to oust Sereno.

Reportedly, the group who set-up the funeral has been staging a protest in front of the Supreme Court since 1st of May, after the SC’s ruling, they are now planning to camp another nine days in Padre Faura Street.

Aside from the group camping outside the Supreme Court, student protesters from different universities including University of the Philippines Diliman, Ateneo de Manila University, and Miriam College also gathered at Katipunan Avenue in Quezon City.

The protest is held to condemn the ouster of Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno whose appointment was nullified after the Supreme Court voted 8-6 to grant the quo warranto petition of Solicitor General Jose Caldia.

On Friday, nine justices agreed to petition Sereno and disqualified her appointment as Chief Justice.

“Maria Lourdes Sereno is found disqualified from, and hereby adjudged guilty of unlawfully holding and exercising, the office of the chief justice,” the SC ruling stated.
