Almost a week after the first day of the 6-month long shut down and cleanup of the world-famous Boracay Island, authorities unearthed yet another pipe releasing foul-smelling liquid with white foam along the White Beach of Boracay.
According to Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) officer-in-charge Richard Favila, the murky liquid flowing from the pipe is forming a puddle on the beach.
“Siguradong waste water ito kasi mabaho. Kung treated water iyan, hindi ‘yan ganiyan kabaho,” he said.
In an interview with DZMM, Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) Assistant Secretary Epimaco Densing III said that a Boracay resident alerted authorities about the foul smell coming from at least 3 pipes which are discharging what it looks like to be a soap suds.
Because of this, a team from the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) dug into the sand only to found a 6-inch diameter blue pipe, cushioned with sand bags to conceal the leak.

“Maiksi lang ‘yung tubo, sa sand lang nagdi-discharge. Pero kapag high tide, aabot ‘yung discharge sa tubig,” Fabila said.
Although authorities have yet traced the source of illegal discharge, the DENR already took water samples from the puddle to test if the liquid has fecal coliforms.
